Artist residencies can offer extraordinary opportunities: dedicated time for your work, new perspectives, international connections and collaborations that continue long after the residency itself.

But with so many programmes available around the world, where do you start?

How do you recognise a residency that genuinely suits your artistic practice, circumstances and goals? And what should you find out before investing your time and energy in an application?

In this practical 90-minute workshop, visual artist Laila Seidel shares insights from her own experience with international artist residencies and artistic networks, with a particular – though not exclusive – focus on Eastern Europe.

What we’ll explore

We’ll look at:

  • different residency formats and what to look for before applying
  • how to assess whether a residency is genuinely a good fit for you
  • important practical questions to clarify before committing
  • common application and preparation pitfalls
  • shorter residencies of around 10–14 days and how they can fit into an ongoing artistic practice
  • how residencies can help build artistic networks, international connections and future collaborations

Finding the right residency – not just any

The aim is not simply to give you a list of residency opportunities.

Instead, the workshop will help you develop a clearer understanding of what you are looking for and give you practical criteria for evaluating the opportunities you find.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of the residency landscape, practical questions to guide your research and greater confidence in deciding where your time and energy are worth investing.

Approximately one hour will be dedicated to the main presentation, followed by 30 minutes for questions and discussion.
